Pratosh Sathishkumar trained in bioinformatics at the University of Western Australia, where his Master's thesis looked at how nonsense-mediated decay holds up across different eukaryotic species, from humans to yeast to ciliates. This led him to question not just what happens to an RNA transcript after it is made, but the chemical marks written onto it along the way and how they vary across organisms. He is now investigating how Nanopore direct RNA sequencing data can be used to explore how these modifications behave in systems beyond the single-organism models, and what that might reveal about RNA regulation more broadly.
