Teaching & Mentoring

People come here to learn how to build a measurement, not how to operate one. You will work on both the experiment and the model behind it, in two groups on two continents, and you should leave able to do something you could not do when you arrived. This is what that looks like in practice.

What training here gives you

Four things we try to hand over to everyone who spends time in the group, whatever they came in knowing.

Both halves of the problem

Every project here has a wet-lab half and a computational half, and we expect you to understand both even if you only run one. A student who can design the experiment and write the model is not competing for the same jobs as one who can do either alone.

Build the measurement, do not just run it

Pipeline fluency ages badly. We teach people why a method returns what it returns, where it breaks, and how to build a new one when the existing measurement does not answer the question. That transfers to whatever comes after the current generation of tools.

Supervision across two groups and two continents

Joint projects between Perth, Canberra, Montpellier and Grenoble are normal here, not exceptional. Students get two supervisors from genuinely different disciplines, time in the partner laboratory, and a network that is theirs afterwards.

We write the applications with you

Scholarships and fellowships are part of the training, not a hurdle you clear alone beforehand. We co-write applications with strong candidates and treat a rejected first attempt as a draft rather than a verdict.

The chemical marks laid on DNA and RNA, how sequencing is made to report them, and how much of what gets called a modification survives contact with the raw signal. Postgraduate, Semester 1.

Ageing and Senescence

IMED3020 / PODI3115 Body Systems 2, UWA

Senescence as a protective stress response that stops damaged cells dividing, and what goes wrong when senescent cells accumulate and their inflammatory secretions start driving tissue dysfunction and chronic disease.

Statistics for Genomics

Statistical modelling for high-dimensional sequencing data, built for a room containing both mathematicians and biologists. Masters level, convened by us.

For biologists who want to design and interpret their own experiments rather than hand the analysis to somebody else.
